SOUTH ADRIATIC COAST - DUBROVNIK AREA:

Amid all the translucent splendour of its Riviera, Dubrovnik is truly the jewel in a dazzling crown. Once it rivalled Venice as a maritime power, with its ships playing their trade in all corners of the known World.
As one of the smaller cities, Dubrovnik enjoyed great importance in the movement of goods and travellers in Europe for a thousand years, thanks to its exceptional geographical position. It is the last protected point along the sailing route from the ports of the north-west Adriatic towards the southeast.
One of the lovely features of Dubrovnik is that one can make a tour of its churches, museums, palaces and city walls on foot. In the summer heat it is pleasant to sit in the deep shade of the palaces and monasteries, waiting night to bring a light mistral wind to cool the hot city walls. Wandering amid the maze of narrow, cobbled streets, wide thoroughfares and splendid squares, amid fountains, palaces and magnificent churches, markets, and restaurants, you are stepping through an age long gone.
